It already some weeks(months?) ago I bought this as of Caligula. And of course I need to share it with all of you! Im not very active last weeks due work and private responsibilities, so I hope to make a good start now .. Extraordinarily nice example. I do not think your photo does justice to this piece ! It has a beautiful style and lovely black patina which the white backround you use does not show to best effect. A bit of a bath in some olive oil and a gentle brushing with some nylon would help smooth out and help remove much of the remaining 'dirt' which still covers too much of the coin. I would not try to remove all of it but I think half the remaining 'stuff' would be safe to loose. Great pick up and I am glad you finally got around to showing it. I am sure the coin is growing on you with time and any second thoughts are a thing of the past ! You would never find this from a dealer for less than double what you paid. Always a good omen !

Dutch that is fabulous. I wouldn't clean it too much, I like the highlighting. I can't believe you kept it to yourself for so long :)

Thanks all for your replies! I've made new photos according to the post of you Jeremy, you were right. The other ones didnt do justice to the coin. Im a little reserved towards extra soaking in olive oil, not sure yet what to do.

I wouldn't put it in olive oil. I am not sure I would clean it at all. Take your time deciding.

I agree somewhat with 'pishpash' about taking some time deciding and I would not want to see it completely cleaned but I feel the areas like the obverse legend, the field before Caligula's face and the upper torso of Vesta herself would be enhanced by removal of some of the 'dirt'. The black patina looks to be quite thick and is likely relatively hard. I doubt it would be effected very much at all. But some prefer the 'rugged' look. I think the emperor could use a 'bath' and a gentle massage.

I agree with FR, but I would still leave it as it is. Once it's off, it's off! Would dry brushing with a toothbrush remove some of the "dirt" it looks as though it will brush off.

Yes I just saw now the 'improved' pics. The darker grey backround and the front lighting on the face help bring out the wonderful portrait style. I think the coin is almost certainly 'Spanish' but the portrait style is really amazing ! It has a rather unique blend of Rome mint style with a provincial feeling to it. First rate all the way and 'museum' quality too !

It took some time but now I can honestly say its one of my favorite coins of my collection! Like it should be for these kind of prices ;-)

I eternally err on the side of undercleaning, but I would especially not touch this one for fear of losing that gorgeous highlighting. You could pick around it a bit with a bamboo pick (or whatever non-metallic thing you generally use) but I'd be very cautious. That's a great example either way though.
