UPDATE
Dsfreeworld, we are developers. A bunch of the coins were in my office because I like looking through them. I can not even begin to explain the amount that was left to me. I have only gone through maybe half of the collection. I began sorting the boxes (coins) as I opened them. My family and I have already filled 3 large buckets with just wheat pennies. Out of those, my kids picked out all the "shiny" or "silver looking" ones as they call them. They are the 1943 steel pennies and they are at 677 as of sunday. We are up to 419 silver dollars and just over 400 gold coins. I cant tell you how many more we still need to go through. The problem now is the coins we sorted and keeping some sort of organization. Lasr night, I found a jewelry box roughly 24 inches long by 12 inches deep by 18 inches high. It has a box top and seven drawers. Inside are another stash of coins and jewelry. Like I said, everything we look in has coins. I was thinking of taking several days off just to dedicate to going through everything. But thats going to be full time. When we cleaned out the home, alot of the sealed boxes went into the attic not knowing there were coins in them as well. The box my wife went to find that was labeled "cloths" had the jewelry box in it. So who knows what else will be found. I normally post questions about certain things on here when I uncover them. I dont post when I think you guys wouldnt really care. Like the pennies.
Anyway, court is thursday. I hope it goes in my favor but more importantly I hope I get my stuff back. ALL of it

You should be putting all those gold coins in a bank box somewhere....

Sounds like to me you need to take a long vacation and get your coins grouped, sorted and into safe deposit boxes or sold. My best advice is get rid of (sold!) the common date minor coins like cents and nickels. You have only so many common Jefferson nickels and wheat cents and then it becomes a hoarding nightmare. Get the truly rare high grade gold and silver coins off to be TPG'd. Get the common date silver and gold inventoried and back into secure vault storage. Good luck!

I have a safe deposit box and do keep about a dozen or so of the really expensive coins in it. But as I said in another post, how are you to enjoy your coins when they are locked in a bank? Plus, every time I bring a few coins to the LCS, he sends some out and they come back being valuable. I waste so much time back and fourth to the bank. I'm ordering a huge gun safe I saw last week. Its capable of holding something like 30 rifles and had storage shelves on the right side. Completely waterproof, fireproof and weighs over 2000 lbs. they are a bit pricey but its worth it to me. I have peace of mind knowing they are protected and I can enjoy them whenever I want. If someone can actually get the safe out of my home they deserve the coins and whatever else is in it 😊

I had my day in court. He got 100 community service and 3 years probation but NO jail. His lawyer also surrendered the 2 coins that were un accounted for. I'm actually shocked that someone can steal 10's of thousands of dollars of items from someone and avoid jail. I spent 7 hours in jail when I was in college for an $8 parking ticket. So I guess every criminal in court now knows to go steal from people because they wont face jail. Its an absolute dissgrace. The best part was we were leaving at the same time. Some words were exchanged between family members ( yes I'm italian, no mattet how old you are the while family shows up) and pushing and shoving ensues. It lasted about 20 seconds and everyone was seperated. As I walked away (i did nothing) I saw he had a bloody nose. I imagine someone cracked him. 😊

Great! You got your coins back! Quote: ( yes I'm Italian, no matter how old you are the while family shows up) I can relate. I'm Italian and this is 100% true lol. You must have been satisfied to see the perp get a whack in the nose!

Three years probation and 100 hours of community service for a first time theft offender is about average as long as restitution was made.
Most likely, this was plea bargained-out between the lawyers and the judge before ya'll even showed up in court. The punishment was negotiated in consideration of a guilty plea (in lieu of a jury trial). The defense did not want a jury trail because they if they lost, the jury would have sent him to prison.
If he does his CS, and completes his 36 month probation cleanly, can he petition the court to get the conviction expunged from his record? That's a big thing now, too.
Glad you got your stuff back. Consider yourself very fortunate.

Wow just read this whole story, that is insane, some people are just pigs in this world! I can relate to your story somewhat Ant, back in the late 80's my father had three of his $2.5 gold pieces go 'missing' on him and never got them back or find out where they have gone

How do you know they went missing on that same day, and not sometime since then?

You might instead contact the probation officer. The perp might prefer to cooperate, rather than having to return to court. Probation conditions can be modified at any time during the sentence.

Because I was with another vendor yesterday and I was telling him what happened. He knows who he is because he comes to the office a few times a month. During the conversation, he mentioned seeing him that day with something he thought he saw in my office. I immediatly went to look and sure enough it wasnt there. For exapmle, you have a fossil dinosaur tooth. you see it all the time in someones office. Then you see someone who has the exact same one and coincidentally, is in the same circle of people. you discover yours is missing. Make sense? It had to be him. I'm mad ar myself for overlooking things as I was distraught by the coins missing. Now after weeks of this crap, after court hearings, I have to go back and do it all over again. Its re living a nigjtmare.
