You need to know how to grade to play with PCGS and NGC too. Unless you want to be part of the "whatever they say must be right" crowd.

SEGS isn't that bad at all. I've purchased several nice coins below market value in SEGS holders that graded as well or better with NGC or ANACS, which I use for my various 'keeper' collections. The plastic surrounding a coin when purchased doesn't matter too much. The only gripe I have with SEGS is that the plastic they use is almost indestructible when you start cracking.

I know I'm late to this topic but here's my input:
I have exactly one coin slabbed by SEGS and I think their grade is spot on. So one day I took the coin to a booth at a convention and got a decent offer on the coin (dealer checked it with a loop and agreed with the grade). The offer was fine but I decided to hold on to the coin at the time ... Fast forward two years and I took the same coin to a highly respected dealer in my town - he saw the slab and said "No, thanks." I said "But you didn't even look at the coin..." He just shook his head and said "No SEGS." I still have the coin.

I'd rate the TPGs this way - First tier - PCGS and NGC Second tier - ANACS and ICG Third tier - SEGS and PCI Most other grading services other than the 6 mentioned are basement slabbing companies. But a few like the original Hallmark grading service, and ANA grading service are legitimate.

I agree with your ranking on all counts.
Of course, counterfeit slabs are getting better every day so what's the next step? Laser-etching coins?

Good luck trying to crack open a SEGS slab.

For attribution and varieties I'd rank them First tier SEGS and ANACS Second tier ICG and PCI Third tier PCGS and then NGC. NGC actually does a better job, but they won't guarantee their attributions and PCGS does.

I know Mr. Briggs. I don't know any of the SEGS graders. Anyone who says SEGS is a terrible grading service is TOTALLY uninformed. While they are not considered to be on the same level as the top four, they have a following and are a competent TPGS.
As a retired old dealer, I consider myself a pretty good coin grader. The truth is there are nice, correctly graded coins in SEGS holders and there are others. That is also the case with EACH OF THE TOP FOUR SERVICES.
If you know what you are doing, you'll be fine buying ANY slab. Would I give SEGS any business? NO, but only because my coins would be worth more in one of the top four slabs.

SEGS graded coins are probably no worse than some of the grades I see in PCGS and NGC holders.

NECRO POST ALERT 2018 THREAD SEGS as we knew it is DEAD. SEGS 2021 INC is a NJ registered business. The IP is reportedly owned by "Key Date Coins", a prolific auction seller based in New Jersey, and functions as a FPG, not a TPG.

Agreed @BStrauss3 Thank you for the feedback. Their address goes to a UPS store in NJ. Once you submit your coins, there is no way to track them. They don't return phone calls or e-mails! They had my coins for "FIVE" months!!! I started a small clams against them and surprisingly my coins just showed up one day! Other then that, they are great! Forget the grading, I like the slabs.
