I pulled this 1950 dollar out of an envelope today to find that the lack of protection has toned it heavily. My question, as titled, is what effect does this have.

Is this a short water line or arnprior?

FOR ME, ugly toning such as this, knocks off about 1/3 of the value of an otherwise equivalent coin. I am much more tolerant with ancient coins in this regard.
Other prospective buyers may be less or more nagatively affected.

The market place is the ultimate determinant of value.

Just my POV, but if it were for sale I wouldn't purchase it I think the toning has lowered the value considerly.

Take that envelope (and any others that you have) and toss them out.
The paper they are made of is NOT conservation material.
The paper has a significant sulfur content and THAT'S what gave your coin(s) that particular color.
As others have said the coin has lost value because of the "eye appeal" factor.

I would say it was an Arnprior. The SWL variety shows all 3 waterlines. Too bad about the toning. It looks like it was a nice MS coin.

Thank you for your responses, I agree. It's painful sometimes wishing you could have prevented an outcome. I will see what others think on ebay, maybe someone has an appreciation for the aged look.

In my opinion, it's not too bad. I wouldn't mind owning a piece like that.

I agree with Paulz on this one, I really don't find it that bad and there is worse coins that you could have.

The toning doesn't affect the grade. Even though most of the time I prefer an untoned coin, I would take this. It looks okay to me, there's worse toning out there.

A toned coin has the exact same value as a nice shiny one. The only difference will be personal preference. Some people like shiny, some people like toned coins. The toning will not affect the grade. If you don't like the toning, dip it! Yeah I said it. Dip it. However, it needs to be done properly. If your not sure how to do it properly, then have someone who does know what there are doing, do it for you.

PS. I am not interested in starting a debate on dipping or not. I'm personally not a fan of dipping unless it is butt ugly toning. But then again I do like a nice shiny coin as well.

Looks like a very nice coin, the toning doesn't bother me at all. Can you let us know if it finds it's way to ebay?

IMO, this coin doesn't have ugly toning. Silver dollars are one of the series that I prefer to remain untoned but the toning on this one is fairly nice and gives the coin an original look.

I have seen far worse toning that degraded any eye appeal regardless of the technical grade....at least you know it's an original coin in this state.
