daveyn Valued Member United States 160 Posts	Posted 09/01/2007 08:28 am I bought this 1873 close 3 at my local coin meeting for $69.00. I didn't have time to look at it real good, but the week 7 in the date caught my eye, the price was right for the grade so I bought it. After getting it home and looking it over real good, I realized it was an 1873 close 3 Snow-1 Double Liberty. Some times no matter how much you know about something, luck can be your best friend. If I didn't collect the die cracks and other odd things, I probably would have missed this great coin. Somewhat similar story, a collector friend of mine bought a coin just because it had nice toning, and paid a premium for it. I figured the coin to be artificially toned and told him so. He was disappointed, and handed me the coin for a closer look. I looked closer, and while I still said the color wasn't right, I found that the coin was a scarce die variety, and even in its current state was probably the highest grade known for the variety. Sometimes they fall into mud and still come out clean! Report this Post to the Staff

Charles, I am amazed at how many collectors and dealers are unaware or just not concerned with varieties. I guess if you are doing a large volume of business, you just may not have the time to scrutinize each coin you have. I know in the Flying Eagle and Indian Head cent series, even high grade PCGS and ANACS graded coins are out there to be found. It's always interesting to read the comments on this forum, it does seem to me that variety collecting is on an upswing, I personally think it is a fun and interesting part of the hobby. There's something about "nonstandard" coins which appeals to me - the rarity, the story behind the difference, whatever, but "stock" just doesn't cut it. Report this Post to the Staff
