I'm hoping to buy some US gold coins this year. I think I will be looking at small gold coins first.

Can anyone help me out with a list of books I should get before I start buying coins?

For one that covers gold from 1795-1933 and all denominations you might want to check out

Garrett & Guth's Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins 1795-1933

Used copies of the first are more affordable and the basic info doesn't outdate just the price guide. Here's one on ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/WHITMAN-ENC...em233e958fcd

You can take a peek inside the second edition on Amazon to see if it one that suits your needs.

If you're after a specific denomination or mint I can offer some specific books on those.

Thanks a lot, MeadowviewCollector!

I grabbed that last old edition on the bay -- I don't believe any of the 'price/value' information in the books anyway since it's out of date by the time the books are printed.

I haven't picked out a favorite coin yet, but I was looking at buying some $5 and smaller coins.

Recently I have become fascinated with California gold. But I think I will start with old tiny US gold this year and learn what I can about that.

I clicked my way here looking for gold books. A little early to the scene it seems, but thanks to MV for starting this off.

I have no books to contribute, but they say a picture is worth a thousand words.

In this link there are 779 high quality photos of graded US gold coins so that is like 779,000 words worth or something like that.

Glad I could help Kelly.

@BuckeyeCoinGuy Doug Winter has handled/sold some amazing old gold pieces over the years thanks for sharing that link.

Any book by David Akers would be a good purchase. Superb researcher and writer who passed in 2012.

Thanks, BluegrassRiver.

I searched the net for his books and I hope to be able to get one of them soon.
