Does anybody know which dates/mints are notorious for weak strikes, if any, in the Franklin series? I have been noticing that a lot of the 1954 San Fran coins are very weak in the hair and ear but are graded as high as MS64. Am I correct in this assumption? Are there other dates to watch for?

What say ye?

According to ' ANA Grading Standards,' the often weakly struck Franklins are: 49-S, 51-S, 52-S, 53-S, and 54-S.

Well the master die was changed after 1959's circulation run, so the details of the obverse and reverse are generally sharper from 1960-63. Before the change up till 1959, a full strike didn't quite have the 'pop' of a 1948 one. However, they didn't recut the bell lines very well, so a FBL piece is a nice one to hold on to.
