Kind of looks like a cigarette light (bic) may have heated that area and the bubbling is around where the area heated happened. It is a darker color in that area?

I'll look at it better tomorrow. My "research station" is just outside of our bedroom, and my husband is sleeping. I wouldn't want to blind him in the night!

Iv done those kinds of tests and if it was from a flame it would need to of been a very small but hot one. I don't think a lighter would be able to do that.

Those little pocket lighters that are a mini torch may be hot enough. Its odd I am not sure on this one.

I'd say you are seeing zinc rot under the plating.

It is possible cause there is defiantly rot there but to only be there and in a full circle' not having a beginning or end, I would lean towards heat like coop said bur I completely agree with silver world that Def not a Bic maybe a little butane lighter could do that but I think the color damage would be worse. Someone with a butane lighter needs to conduct an experiment

I think it is clear PMD is safe to say,the Why and How is a bad bet guessing game. I am not clear myself why/how this happen to the Cent, public handling is a sure bet overall.
