Hi forum. Hope this isn't a stupid question. I'm new to collecting and was wondering if this nickel just has environmental damage? Someone said its just dirt. I was hoping it was a missing clad layer. Sorry if this is a silly question.

Nickels aren't clad, but made from a solid cupronickel alloy. So it cannot be missing clad.

It's just a dirty coin which has been "circulation cameoed" by handling. Dirt won't stick where your fingers are rubbing it in circulation.
