At $480, it was definitely a good deal, and seemed genuine. It's definitely not VF, but I'd go as high as VG.

Yes - a net grade of VG-10 or F-12. Even at that, the Red Book lists the type at $800 in G-4 and $1000 at VG-10. The cheapest I have found on ebay auctions for VG has been $735. Price seems to be a matter of timing. A VF Massachusetts cent went yesterday for $109, whereas $300 seems to be standard. |

I would be kind of skeptical of it. Why isn't this graded by a TPGC? Nice buy if it is real but when graded ones like the link below in the same condition are selling for over $2k you have to wonder...why would the seller let it go so cheap and why didn't the other collectors/dealers jump all over it? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...e=osi_widget |

The pictured 1798 bust dollar is VF-20 and undamaged. The final sales price is sometimes a function of timing. These bust dollars in VG - F have been selling for as little as $710 and as high as $1010. In a recent auction, a seller offered two nearly identical coins with closing times five minutes apart. One sold for $21, the other for $5. It makes no logical sense. I think $3000 for a coin entombed in a slab is outrageous. I note that it remains unsold.

Thank you for the info. The coin looks beter in hand than in the picture. The rim nick does appear to be a defective planchet, and you may well be right about the adjustment marks. The "scratch" does look like file marks rather than a typical grafitti. Weight is 26.7 grams on my cheap scale. I have not closely examined the variety yet.
