I am trying to find out more about a silver 1973 penny. It weighs 2.5 grams. I Know a normal 1973 penny weighs 3.11 grams. I am curios as to the drastic weight difference. I would like to know what material this penny is made out of. I also would like to know what the elusive 1974 aluminum penny weighs.
Rest in Peace

I'm sure some of our experts will give you an answer.

I can tell you that down through the years I have found "silver" cents from time to time.

Each time they turned out to be plated.

I can't account for the difference in weight.

Last time I checked Clad dimes weighed 2.27 grams . and would show the copper core on the edge.

2.5 grams is exceptionally light and rules out silver as a metal type for the cent .

we need to see some pictures of the coin !!
