Hello all,

Some time ago I bought this ANACS-slabbed 1958 Lincoln. It is attributed as a Breen-2223 variety which I understood to be an 8 over 7 overdate. If true, that would be the only Lincoln Cent overdate that I've ever heard of. Under a microscope I can see what might be traces of a diagonal stroke of a leftover 7 under the 8, but it's pretty faint. My photos don't really show much evidence of the possible overdate.

What say you Lincoln variety specialists? Is this an actual overdate? If not, is it even a variety at all? I would appreciate some input.

Thanks!

Breen was wrong. It is not what he thought it was. It was proven not to be an overdate years ago.

Thank you Foundinrolls,

So, is this coin considered any type of variety at all? Is it just an ordinary BU 1958 cent with no premium value?

Thanks again!

No premium, It's a coin with evidence of a die gouge.

I'm not a Lincoln variety specialist & I don't mean to contradict foundinrolls. If he knows for a fact that there's no such animal then ignore my post.

But when I look at your closeups, I see a very clear leg of the 7 on the west side of the inner east part of the upper loop of the 8.

It was a reducing lathe scratch. Common of several different die for 1958. New information by the experts all agree that its, not an over date. According to Chuck there are no overdates on the Lincoln Cent series. Doubled dies on dates. But not over dates. There are the 1942/1 Dimes and a 1943/2 Nickel. But nothing known in the Lincoln series, yet.

1958/7 cents do not exist. Plain and simple. Among the Lincoln Cent crowd it has been a sore issue for more than ten years now that people still blow their money on them not knowing.

You have a normal 1958 cent - no premium value.

I try very hard to post what I know to be factual. Some times I'm brief , if I'm busy working on something else.

If I am applying guesswork to an answer, I'll always say that. I have posted to some of the threads where I will say something like....I'm not 100% sure, or the jury is out, or words to that effect.

There are times where I'll even just plain screw up:-) but it ain't often:-)

Many of us have seen these supposed overdates on the 1958 cents over the years and we all agree it is not an overdate.

As a general rule, and I could be wrong about this...I look for other sources besides Breen. Some of his interpretations of things have been proven to be unreliable. So a Breen Number on a slab is usually the first thing that makes me a little cautious:-)
