Here's a section that is a sideline to those collecting British Commonwealth & pre-Confederation Canadian coinage. It is about the coins of Newfoundland, which was the only one of the colonies in what is now Canada to have their own gold coins - the famous $2 of 1865-88.There are some key dates in the Newfoundland coin series, especially the 1946C silver 5c. coin.

Aidan Work:

I have a small box full of Newfoundland coins.

Is there a reference book you would recommend, so that I might learn more about what I have?

Thanks.

The Charlton Standard Catalogue also has a section for Newfoundland coins. It's pretty informational and has info on different varieties also.

Thanks.

Turns out I had the Charlton book in my library, and forgot I had it. One less thing to buy!

The Newfoundland coin series is a very difficult one to collect, not only because of the low mintage figures, but also
because of the presence of varities such as in the portraits
of Queen Victoria,& re-engraved dates, such as the 1940(C) 1 Cent.I don't know how one can tell the re-engraved dates from the normal dates of the same year. The normal 1940 1c. is listed quite low, whereas, the re-engraved date 1940 1c. is listed quite high. Some denominations in the Newfoundland coin series very seldom turn up at all, namely the silver 25c. of King George V & the gold $2.

Ojo,Newfoundland never had Nickels.Surely, you must mean the little silver 1943C 5c. coin of King George VI?
