dan10opa New Member United States 2 Posts	Posted 12/19/2007 11:59 pm Hi, newbie here on a quest to find out why my 2005 Buffalo nickel has a large pink spot on it. I got it from a US Mint roll when they came out. It's a pink spot over the buffalo otherwise it seems like an ordinary coin. Thanks, I'm really curious... Jaobler Pillar of the Community United States 6381 Posts	Posted 12/20/2007 12:24 am Hi Dan10opa, welcome! That's an odd-looking coin, all right. I'm thinking it might be from improperly-mixed alloy. Nickels are made from an alloy of 75% copper plus 25% nickel. If there were an area with excess copper in the alloy strip that they punch the blanks from, any coins made from those blanks could show a reddish color due to the higher copper content. A similar phenomenon sometimes occurs with gold coins, causing what are called copper spots. Since your coin is from an original roll it seems unlikely that it has been stained with some foreign substance. Very interesting. I wonder if any other forum members have some input? A grading service isn't going to grade that as an error, and the overall grade of the coin would probably turn it out to be worth 6 cents at the most. Sorry, just being truthful.
