24K Gold IS .9999 fine gold. It's that way by law. If something is gold plated it must state so or the person selling it can be arrested for fraud.

We seem separated by legal definitions I did not know existed Here you can only call gold what is at least 18 Karat otherwise you have to call it an amalgamation or mixture or whatever So selling a goldmedal at 0.575 is illigal (not 18 K ) On the other hand in practice all jewellers and all ebayers selling goldplated will refer to 24 K products Because over here jewellery is either 18K or goldplated 24K pure gold is not usefull in jewellery because of wear problems and goldcoins are either 0.900 and upwards to 99999 And yes I never ever bought a five nine coin 99999 because I think it is a marketing trick Like you said the difference between four and five nines is purely theoretical

These are american 24K gold quarters The vendor omits any further identification but I understand this to be goldplated junk and I may be wrong but since nobody is bidding all the others have the same understanding http://cgi.ebay.de/24-Karat-Gold-Mu...cmdZViewItem

There are quite a few countries now selling pure 24K gold and the U.S. will join the competition in 2006. The current gold eagles are only 22K gold and it seems many big investors prefer the pure (real) gold. One reason for keeping the gold at 22k is other metals then used in manufacturing the coins make it more solid as pure gold will be somewhat softer than what we in the states are used to. None the less, if the mint goes with a reproduction of the classic Indian/Buffalo nickel it will be Katy bar the doors as 2006 will be a record gold year for the mint. Won't have to wait long to find out either!

in most circulating goldcoins there is 10% copper or in the best of cases 10 % silver to make it wear resistent but an ounce of gold is still an ounce of gold wheather deluted in copper or silver

Ageka and crystal, my dad thinks pure gold coins are useless because you cant carry them in your pocket. Also he said they are so soft you cant do anything with them because they will scratch, so just how soft are they being pure gold?

GCL Gold has a hardness of 2-3 on the hardness scale.Which in the world of minerals means it can easily be scratched with a fingernail. For a look into the world of elemental hardness(mineral) Check out this site !! http://www.minerals.net/mineral/sor...hardnes1.htmRick
