I usually don't pay much attention to coins on the ground. I will pick them up but they wind up in the piggy bank. I did notice this poor little guy in the parking lot of a hardware store the other day and he looked so pathetic I decided to give him a safe home. Poor Abe, I hope he will be alright.
Yuck.

I would hope it had seen some better days.

Bumping this old thread with a noteworthy find.

My three year old daughter found a 1986 5 franc coin from Belgium in the middle of a Tuesday Mornings in North Carolina.

So many questions....

My biggest find in the wild is a pile of banknotes worth about $175. It was when I was having a side job in the local super market. I saw something laying on the ground and it looked brown, so I picked it up, assuming it'd be some rubbish left on the floor. At the time, certain banknotes were also brown. So at closer inspection it turned out to be a pile of banknotes instead. I guess it just fell out of the pockets of one of the customers.

Unfortunately for me, as I found it in the super market during work time, I wasn't allowed to keep it. We went out for beers one year later when the pile hadn't been claimed by anyone. It got me an awesome CV when I left, though...

Furthermore, I think I find about one coin a day in countries where cash is still king. In some extreme cases I found over 20 a day (Jamaica, recently). I sort of have a nose for it. If I can use the coins (like euros or dollars), then I just add them to the jar and once a year I do something nice with it, otherwise they et spent immediately or I put them with all the other foreign junk coins.

Just now I found a 2009 Peruvian Nuevo Sol on my way to the metro (writing this on the metro). At first I was hoping it to be a silver 1 krona again

Now that coin is a long way from home. It would make a great addition to your collection if you were on your way to Høtorget!

When it comes to the weirdest find, I found an also Peruvian 10 centimos coin once, also in Sweden (Stockholm) a few years ago. But that was in a hotel room and gave me doubts about the quality of the cleaning there.

ps. I don't call these coins 'ground finds', but 'roadkill', given how a lot of coins look after spending some time on the ground/road.

I constantly look for coins when walking around. It's a bit annoying, but at the same time I don't step in anything ugly :D
Among my best finds:
- 20 € bill,
- silver necklace (about 15 grams)
- 10 cent Italy 2016 (went directly into album)

I tend to find coins often around ATM's; mostly 1, 2 and 5 euro cents, but I've also found US cent, Bosnia and Herzegovina mark and Hungarian forint this way.

Yesterday I was at Miami airport and someone left a bunch of small change (worth about $1 in cents, nickels and dimes) in the security control box. Not sure if it's roadkill, but it's loose change laying around for me to take, so I guess it counts.

Today's finds are less spectacular: one brand new 2016 dime and one 1998 quarter. As said, I have a nose for it and I really like countries where cash is still king.

Not coins, but a awhile ago, while walking my dog I found some cash on the ground. Saw some ones on the outside of the fold and a twenty inside. Quickly stuck it in my pocket and went on my way. A few hours later I decided to count it and as I opened the fold I saw a hundred dollar bill...then another... and more. Total was $599!Checked facebook and waited awhile and nobody said anything. No wallet or any identifiers...just cash

I look forward to the snow in parking lots this time of year.Lost coins and objects fallen in the snow are plowed into piles and left to melt.I cruise these piles checking for treasures.

I found a $20bill on the ground at a garage sale this summer. I pick up pennies-all-the-time. I get way more excited about garage sale finds.

While metal detecting, I've found not only current coinage from the last 30-40 years, but a token with Teddy Roosevelt on it, a 1941 (I think) wheat in the sand of a beach, etc.

Nothing older than the wheat unfortunately.
