I bought this in an old Anacs white holder. Paid a little less than PCGS 64 price. Thought it would be easy to get in a PCGS holder with the same grade. I cracked it because I didn't have any other crossovers and I needed another coin for the quarterly grading special. Came back 63. I thought it might even get an uptick because of the clean cheek and eye appeal. My grading is lacking I guess. I really like the coin but I am putting a Morgan collection together and really don't want a 63 for that year and mint mark. This is 2 out of 4 Anacs that downgraded for me so far. Pretty frustrating. Looking for help on the grade and if I should resubmit. Thanks.

Looks like a really nice strike. I think what probably cost you in the grading on this one is the number of hits in the face, neck and above the eyebrow, because the field appears to look clean. Just my opinion.

That should have come back as a 64. Surprised.

I agree. I'm surprised that didn't 64. Although I don't think the price difference possibility is worth another submission fee.

The price jump is $90 from 63 to 64. I'm putting together a registry set. I really like the coin but don't really want an 1880 MS 63 in it. Not to mention the money I lose if I choose to sell it in the future. If I resubmit and get a 64 I will just about break even. Right now I would lose a bit. Should it grade 64 if I resubmit?

If you think it would grade 64 and from what others and my self agree it should be a 64...I have seen 64's with more hits and this coins it pretty clean, the minor chatter in the left field on the obv and small hits to the face shouldn't relegate this coin to a 63.

Thanks for the grades. Going to give this coin one more shot at 64. When I first sent it I thought it was 64 for sure with a chance at a + for eye appeal and strike.

It certainly looks like MS64 from where I'm sitting.

Maybe they gave it 63 due to the broken luster across the cheek. I like it at MS64

I think they viewed the partial black rim tone as a negative and the gash above the eye.
