I'll let CCF do the guessing on this one.

This 1866 IHC is in an old white ANACS holder, straight grade. I also have a 1866 in an ICG slab, but this one is nicer by a lot, and more interesting to look at, even with a carbon spot or two.

Thoughts on a grade, and anything else you wish to share, welcomed.

You did say this got a straight grade with no details for environmental damage?

If it's that old there is a good chance the black marks and spots have grown since the encapsulation. The photos are pretty dark, I'm having trouble seeing all the coin's surfaces. I'm going with VF35 from what I can see, might even have been EF40 back then.

It's a double mint error. That might clear things up a bit. Obverse is Struck Through Grease. Date is repunched (1866/6), RPD-003 / Snow 7.

This is a fairly scarce variety, and the struck-through error is also interesting to me. Most of you got it right in the XF range :)

Better pictures:

Nice woodgrain toning, not E.D. unless you consider the carbon spot E.D.

The die was filled with grease when struck; this caused the "blob" that covers a lot of the details, as well as the weird surface toning. The sharpness of the feathers, the ribbon, and the reverse details are your keys to the actual grade.
