I am not sure if this is the right place for this but knew more of you would read this post here. Please go to the "Items for Sale" section if you would like the opportunity to acquire a 2005 Vatican City euro coin. They are EXTREMELY hard to come by and I will explain more in the other post. Thanks guys and gals!

ALL THE VATICAN CITY COINS HAVE BEEN SPOKEN FOR! Thank you for the tremendous response to my post. Will be in touch with everyone who asked for the coins very soon as they have already been shipped out of Europe. I might add that all the coins, except one, went to regular forum members and that was my hope when I jumped on this opportunity to purchase them. Thanks again!

Surely there must be just one left for a good cradle Catholic who sings in the choir? [:p]
Maybe a personal letter to the Pope, he seems like a nice man!

One forum member has emailed to let me know her Vatican City coin has arrived. I do hope the rest of you will do the same? Like knowing everything arrives safely!

On the same topic, my mom just went to Europe and asked us if we wanted anything. We eagerly told her "Vatican city Euro!!!". She called from several different countries, and no luck. She called from the Vatican and said that all merchants rarely see them, and if she finds one she will be darn lucky. We were bummed.
Then, she went to Leon, France and was in a tiny postcard shop and saw the lady had some coins in 2x2 's in the cabinet. She asked her "Do you have any Vatican Euros?", where the lady said "No English". My mom said "POPE?" and the lady goes "YES! YES!". She reaches down under the counter, pulls out a tiny wood box, unlocks it and pulls out a coin in a 2x2. It was a 2000 commemerative Vatican Euro Prototype. She paid a whoppin' 4 euros for it. It sits happily in one of my coin books. Pope John Paul never looked better.

Any Vatican City coin that is REAL is very very sought after all over the world. There are a lot of copies so one has to be careful. "Probes" is a commonly used word in Europe and many medals, like the new "coins" for the new Pope aren't real euro coinage. They might have been struck as commemorative collectables but are not legal tender. Italy strikes the Vatican City coinage and NONE is put into circulation as it all goes in Proof and Mint Sets as the European Union dictates how many coins can be produced in each EU nation and those numbers are based on population. Well, the Vatican is about 140 acres, if I remember correctly, so production is very low. I also might point out that Vatican has raised the prices on all their offerings twice since 2002 and all sets have at least doubled in cost with the mint sets reaching $30 and the proof sets now at $125. Guess that is to offset the huge collector value they gain immediately after leaving the Vatican?

Who do they sell it to? Why is it that we can't buy it from their mint like other countries?

Does anyone know if the Vatican has their own mint? I would think they would use the same one as the Italian Government or maybe contract out to someone in G.B.

The Italian government strikes the Vatican City coins at this time. Shoot, it takes the small staff at the Vaticn ALL year just to mail out their offerings so I can't imagine how long it would take them to hammer out their coins.

It wouldn't do you any good if it was in English as the Italian mint does NOT sell Vatican City coins. They must come from the Vatican and, unless something has changed recently, their customer list is still frozen with no new customers being added or accepted.
