The variety I posted was the wrong one.
1963-D WDDR-007
A very close Class II spread shows on the upper portions of the letters of E PLURIBUS UNUM.

Spread is what happens to that portion of our anatomy that is in contact with a chair for large portions of the day as we try to determine if that CRH coin has MD or DD ;-)

Spread in relation to a dd is how far the second impression spreads from the first. Think the famous 55 dd lincoln. It has one heck of a "spread"

So a spread is different than a dd that it is not as noticeable and only the top or the bottom of the letters have it?

"Spread" is a way of describing a feature of the Doubled Die. Part of the device is "spread" a little or a long way from the original device.

It is the direction of the hubbing differences that alters the die, then passed down on all coins coming from the die.  Note the different hub locations for this die on this coin? That is the spread between the two hubbings that make this a doubled die. |
