I have about four or five of these 1987 cents.
So I'm pretty sure that this was a very common.
Issue in 87. What was going on here. One looks
Possibly like a partial collar. So I thought
That was it but then theres a few where the letters
Are in the collar so maybe an off center ? Looking
Some info from you wise men.

The wise men will be along to offer input. What it looks like to me is a bit of a few things; PMD, MAD, and die wear. The dies were worked pretty hard in the 80s, so you see lots of redressing of the dies to keep them in service. But this led to devices being compromised, especially outer devices.

I agree... Very Late Die State and a slight MAD (misaligned die).

Also the die edge on the left looks like it was over polished. (that will reduce the height of the 'L'. Or another possiblilty, it is die attrition and the side of the die was rubbed off? Note how close the IN GOD is on the rim area?

Die wear. This type of die wear, which I've called "design-devouring die wear" entails the field portion of the die sinking down as far as the deepest portion of the letter recesses. This results in the thinning and ultimate disappearance of the affected letters. In Lincoln cents it most often appears just internal to the design rim, where it forms a " Ridge Ring" (Eric Von Klinger's term).
