I'm brand new to this forum but have been collecting coins for many years and consider it the greatest hobby there is . I have even seriously considered becoming a professional numismatist (dealer/scholar as well possibly) although I have been a high school science teacher my whole career of 6 years (I'm in my late 20's). I am very passionate about coins and learning everything about them and the history behind them! That said, for this post I want everyone's grading opinions on this 1812 Capped Bust half dollar. It is the variety O-103 I believe and is graded by NGC but I would still like everyone's opinion and then I'll reveal the NGC grade later.

By the way, the edge is pristine with no rim nicks or bumps. There are a couple of spots visible on the reverse picture (1 o'clock, 6o'clock, and 9:30) where it appears the edge has small bumps on the denticles but after seeing the coin in hand it's just the top of the edge letters which actually ran into the end of the edge and made those impressions into the denticles! Maybe the old Castaing machine was just slightly off that day! Also, since the luster is hard to discern from the pictures, in hand the coin has clear, full cartwheel luster on both the obverse and reverse when rotated in my hand, although it is much more subdued than on a brilliant white coin due to the deep, even, silver grey toning. I look forward to hearing everyone's opinions of the grade!

to CCF. Sounds like you will fit in nicely here. What grade to you give it? Here is a great site to learn grading http://www.PCGS.com/Photograde/#/Capped50/Grades I am not good at grading but would guess MS-63?

It's a beauty with a great strike, I'd say MS-65. I don't see any distracting marks and using these photos I can't be 100% sure the surfaces are natural but they appear to be. Great coin and one to be proud of.

By what I see I would give it MS-63. However, if it has the luster you say it has, which I can't see, I would give it MS-65.

This is definitely one of the nicer capped bust halves I have seen I see a 65. Welcome from a fellow late 20's teacher (I am social studies, alas still looking for a permanent position). Seems like you know your stuff and you should have no problem fitting in here. If you got questions feel free to drop me a Private Message.

Strike and surfaces look excellent. The photos don't show much luster, but if you say it's there, I would say a strong MS-65. Beautiful coin!

Beautiful! Looks fully original. I'm gonna say 64-65. I like the look of this one. I also have a few that appear to have rim bumps but are actually letters from the edge that are up to high (or too low).

Oh, and welcome to the forum!

this is a beautiful very nicely struck example. I really like the toning on this one. MS64. MS65 is definitely possible.
