Appears to be a planchet flaw.

I think it's most likely die damage.

That's the case for US coins, but not for Australia & NZ.

In this case, I think there may be a lam running through that section of the coin, and to me, the 'bar' looks like the bottom bit of the 1st N has lifted and is now pointing right making it appear 'joined to the 2nd N.

Any chance of a good close up of that area?
