Hi there all
Has anyone noticed a different 'ring' a 2006 20 cent coin gives compared to earlier years? To me, the 2006's have a tinnier ring, and is especially noticeable when clinking 2 or 3 coins together. I got my wife to hold 3 2006's and 3 1980's era 20's, and clink them, not letting me know in which hand was which - and I could pick them correctly every time......

Was this about the time the RAM went to Korea for its blanks, or maybe there was a subtle change to the composition of the metals?

As far as I know there has been no change in composition since 1966. Weigh them all maybe. And see if they are slightly under or over.

I've come across a 20 and a 50 cent piece that have felt "wrong" and fail the drop test - the 50 made me think aluminium the 20 was missing some design elements. I've not yet found a satisfactory explanation.

Agree penny dreadful. Noodling at the moment 20c pieces and the 2006 do have a different sound.

NOW you have got me going! I will have to take a few 2006's from circulation, and investigate!

My uncirculated set has a diameter change between 1996-97, 5c 19.53 to 19.42, 10 23.72 to 23.6, 20c 28.65 to 28.52, 50c 31.65 to 31.51, $1 25.12 to 25 and $2 20.62 to 20.5. Is this correct as it can affect the sounding of the coin. Weights were the same.

I have been researching info 2006 20c coins because I have found a new error with them also I was wondering why some sounded different.
On looking up I read that all of New Zealand coins were demonetized in 2006 and some before, they got the Royal Canadian Mint in 2006 to make the new coins because "here is one of the interesting bits" the Canadian Mint had been making there own coins from plated steel and so I looked a little further into the size of New Zealand coins and here's the other bit the new New Zealand 50c coins are the same size as our 20c coins! javascript:insertsmilie('')
Finally I have some useful info to share javascript:insertsmilie('')

I am pretty certain that in 1981 we had the Canadians give us a hand minting 20 cent coins (3.5 claw variety), But since then I Don't think so
If your coins are different they may have come from a mint in China

I'm still puzzled as to why, but there's something different to the sound a 2006 20c makes when clinked....even today I had a 20c coin in a handful of change, and hearing how it sounded, I bet my wife I could guess the date without looking at it...you guessed it, a 2006..!!

I've contacted the Mint and they say there's no difference in the blanks, as compared to other years.

Get some 2006's and have a listen - to me there's a slightly higher pitch to the sound..

Try a magnet on these "odd" sounding coins, If they stick they are forgeries.

This is on Wikipedia

On 31 July 2006, the new 20 cent coin was released alongside the new 10 cent and 50 cent coins as part of the Reserve Bank's "Change for the better" silver coin replacement. The new 20 cent coin had the same reverse as the 1990 to 2006 minted coins and the same obverse as the 1999-onward coins, but the coins were reduced in size. The new 20 cent coins are made of steel, covered in a layer of nickel, copper, then nickel again. The new coins are 21.75 mm in diameter and 4 grams in weight. They have Spanish flower milling around the edge, splitting it into seven sections.

And also there is a link near the bottom of the page that says

Coins of the New Zealand dollar.
click it cause it has more info as well as the size of the new coins

I think the Canadian Mint used New Zealand 50c planchet for some of our 2006 20 cent coins javascript:insertsmilie('')

Candace, I have to disagree sorry as our coins are minted at the Royal Australian Mint.

While there were occasions (most notably during the 80's) when the RCM struck circulation coins for Australia, there have not been any such instances in recent times.

The 2006 RCM coins struck for New zealand are a completely different composition, weight and diameter (5g, 24.75mm) compared to the Aussie 20c piece (11.3g, 28.65mm).

While the RAM secures its blanks from the Poongsan Corporation, any attempt to strike on such underweight and undersized dies would not only bear visible deformation/weakness, but would in addition weigh noticeably less than a 10c piece.

Hi Candice, sorry as well, but FNQ is correct.

Here's a link that might help.

It was a great theory though!

The Royal Canadian Mint didn't produce any Australian 20c pieces in 2006.
I think the Royal Australian Mint may have produced New Zealand mint sets in 2006 or 2007 using plated steel planchets from the Royal Canadian Mint, but I doubt that enough were bought to produce 102.3 million 20c pieces (I don't think more than 5000 to 10000 New Zealand mint sets were made in those years). Also, the New Zealand 50c pieces are 24.75mm and 5g while our 20c pieces are 28.65mm and 11.3g: a New Zealand 50c piece is much close to our 10c piece.

edit: never mind, FNQ and The Unicorn covered it.
