Hi Everyone,

This is a recent purchase, I was wondering what people thought? It has a great original luster and tone:

AU-58. Lovely strike for an 1809.

Coins like this should NEVER be called MS when there is obvious wear (see talons, tops of wings, hair next to ear, etc). TPGs often market-grade AU-58s as MS-60-63, and deceptive dealers price their coins as if the coin had no wear and wasn't market graded (and sometimes are even bold enough to say there is no wear). One of the many reasons why third-party graders should not exist. Third party authenticators would be just fine.

Don't believe me? Ask Bill Fivaz. He warned my coin club specifically to watch out for AU-55/58 bust halves that have been market-graded as MS.

While it looks pretty good it probably has a "second skin" on it giving it average eye appeal. That said, it's certainly market acceptable for a AU+ piece and is well struck too so it's worth owning at the right price.

Wow, what a beauty. AU-58. I want to say MS but I think it just misses by a hair.

Unless we can inspect the weakness with a loop, I can't call the areas mentioned by typecoin as wear with 100% certainty like he seems to be certain. I don't think Bill Fivaz could either. Those are all common high points not fully struck up on some examples. Not saying it is or isn't MS. I can't tell from the pics.

Beauty, just a touch of wear. Do you have a pic of the edge?

I am going off of the significant color change on all of the high points. It is much duller silver color, which is caused my the loss of the spectral properties of uncirculated silver. This is the same reason why BU coins tone rainbow, and circulated coins tone grey.

Thanks for the replies! I paid near AU58 money for the coin from Europe. Was advertised as aUnc so very happy with the coin. Will head off to PCGS next week and I`ll post the results when I get them.
