I remember reading an article several years ago about the U.S. mint making a mistake to produce the SBA dollars. This was because the dollars failed to gain acceptance with the general public. There was a picture with this article showing pallets mounded up with sacks of SBA's sitting in a large room at the U.S. mint. Apparently these are coins they could'nt keep in circulation.If these coins still exist, is there a possibility these can/will be dumped back into circulation? If this happened, what would it do to the value of SBA's in private collections? Is this similar to what happened with Morgan dollars years ago? |

I don't think you have too much to worry about. The mint has kept some "for future sets" but the rest were destroyed when the Sackie was issued. I really don't think you will see any great value for the SBA or the Sackie. Just too many were minted. catman |

Whoa there Catman! Have you priced a full set of Sackies, or sold any, in the last few months? While they aren't exactly in high use, here in the states, it is NOT because people won't accept them or use them. Try to find a bank in Indiana in an 8 hour day that has any? The banks DON'T want them and they really don't care what their customers want or need. And, that worthless Sackie hasn't been produced for circulation since 2001 so the price of a set (18 coins right now) will run you in the $150 range according to where you locate one at! And, if the mint keeps producing them, right along with the stupid Presidentail dollars I can honestly say the Sackies will be THE coin to stay after. Now as for as the SBA is concerned they were too darn close to a quarter in design, feel and color. People made mistakes and cashiers made mistakes! Folks just didn't like them but there are a couple of real costly SBA's if one wants to build a set. I had them all but sold the high price babies as I have no love for the coin in any way shape or form. The SBA is DONE in this country and do believe soon they will all be destroyed as putting them back on the market would accomplish absolutely nothing. So, in ending, be kind to my Sackies as that is the ONLY new coin in the past 5 years that is really worth something in an unc. set, along with the proofs of course! |

crystalk64 Regardless of what these things sell for with the mintage being so high the price seems to be inflated from where I'm sitting. There is nothing holding the value up. If I had a choice I would rather put my $150.00 in a nice 1819 Bust Half Dollar than in a SBA or Sackie. Of course this is all personal taste. I know a collector would has 3 sets of SBS and would kill you if you ask hime to sell you one (VBG). To each his/her own. catman |

If you would, I would like to make an honest comparison, and being the friends that we are could you just send that 1819 Bust Half up here and let me decide for myself? If I really like it I will just send you all my extra Sackies and maybe a surprise or two. I will watch my mailbox! Now, down to the matter at hand, we were discussing SBA's and Sackies and their current value and my friend, as my dealer states, the Sackies have no where to go but up as quite honestly how many idiots, like myself, do you think are keeping up with the Sackies anyway? And you go an throw in a U.S. classic into this tale? No comparison, I will agree, as the old coins are full of history, memories and craftsmanship that we no longer see today but some of us STILL collect modern coins out of our love for dead politicians and the need to collect something other than belly button lint so they will have to do until we can get a one pound hotdog here and something with a splash of strawberries! |

I might have sent you the 1819 Bust half but right now it sitting in one of your oak holders on my roll top desk. Fat chance of getting iy from me. I get a lot of comliments on that coin since I got the display holder.

While the U.S. Mint does not have any SBA dollars, there are an estimated 100 million laying in bank vaults, and lest we forget, the Morgan dollar sales also came from the banks, not the Mint. The Sac supporters have blamed the SBA dollar hoards as being the reason that the dollar did not succeed. The supporters of the Presidential dollar series are also laying that same groundwork. When this dollar fails, it will be blamed on the SBA and SAC dollars that are sitting in the bank vaults. Edited by national dealer

The Sac Dollar did not fail! Our banking system has failed the dollar coin and the American people. Until the Fed FORCES the dollar coin on the banking industry it will never succeed and I don't care if they put the Playmate of the Month on there you still won't be able to get them from the banks until they face fines stipulated by the governement for some sort of non-compliance. Me personally, I like the Sac but still hate SBA! Catman, If it would make you feel better, just send the coin IN the holder! Will offer more protection for the slab in route and I can have the chance to admire your coin right here in Indiana!!! Have changed the design, just a little, on the holders you I guess you have a TYPE 1 now which may become a RARE collector item!!! See I have done you a favor! |

No Problem with the Susan B's. The last time I got one from the US Government was at the Post Office about 6 months ago from there machines. When I got some stamps from a machine and it had to give me change in dollars. They all were Susan B's. If they had a plan to get rid of them there hard at it. I'm sure there are other ways that there doing it too.
