Interesting Die Crack On 2013 P Nickel

I see a die crack that extends from the first S of STATES across to each letter along with die chips in the tops of the S's. I understand the die crack but I'm having a little trouble wrapping my mind around how the chips were formed in the deep recesses of the S's on the die. I appreciate your help. Druu Pillar of the Community United States 1000 Posts	Posted 01/23/2017 8:58 pm I'm seeing a crack connecting the STA of states. I see a die chip in the last S of states. Bella, dies are mirror images of the produced coin, so the top of the S where the chip is would be the protrusion, and the letter S itself would be incused on the die. (It makes sense in my head, but I might be totally wrong.) Report this Post to the Staff

coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 01/23/2017 10:05 pm A chip is formed when a piece breaks away from a device. When the metal falls away, it leaves a void on field of the die. When a strike happens, the void is filled with the metal. So when you have an incuse void on the die, it leave a raised area on the field. Thus the term die chip as the die chipped away. Report this Post to the Staff
