Congrats, Spence!

Thanks for the contest, Spruett! A fun one for sure. Which US Mint issue has a Nathaniel? I wasn't sure whether to rule out the N because of coin's "no middle name" guess.

Yay! I'll send you a PM.

What led you to this answer?

I was looking at the letters that were left and trying to think of ones with names that had some sort of numismatic relevance. So I typed them in to the CCF search engine and this one kinda popped out at me:

http://goccf.com/t/164256

As I mentioned in my guess, I was split as to whether the correct answer began with a you or S or was something completely different. Lots of folks were guessing S names, so I went in this other direction.

Interesting. The first historical hint was in reference to Nathaniel Gorham, the 8th President of the United States in Congress Assembled. Under Gorham, they passed

"An Ordinance for the establishment of the Mint
of the United States of America,
and for regulating the Value and Alloy of Coin"

in 1786. This led to the minting of the Fugio cent and eventually to the "Coinage Act of 1792" after the Constitution had been adopted.

He was also a signer of the US Constitution.

The second hint refers to Nathanael Greene (also spelled Nathaniel), a Revolutionary War general who appears on a medal in the "America's First Medals" set. It commemorates the Battle of Eutaw Springs and is a copy of the original medal presented to Greene.

_____

If it had gone on longer my next hint was going to be:

- The name of a prize-winning thoroughbred racehorse contains my middle name.

Oh well. Thanks again everyone for playing!

Tricky. I would never have gotten it. Present tense "appears" made me consider only current series. Knocked out all of the older coins, which left Presidential dollars. Eliminating letters left Ulysses S. Grant and Zachary Taylor. I was hoping one was NIFC would would jive with your public release limitation. Neither were NIFC. Taylor died early on and didn't do much. Grant signed the Coinage Act of 1873, so I was sure that was it!

And I was certain it was Samuel. Samuel Moore was 4th or 5th Director of the Mint. And Mark Twain, aka Samuel Clemens, was just on a commem last year. Add to that my thinking it had to start with S or U, and Samuel looked pretty good. It had to be! Haha.

Spruett, are you sure you aren't mistaken?

Mr. Samuel Nathanial Ulysses Pruett

My goof was misreading the clue as a current/recent issue meant for circulation.
Rest in Peace

efficient use of the CCF site

At the risk of slightly sidetracking this thread, I would jsut like to say that I use the search function of CCF perhaps more than any other functionality on this website. Certainly more than the dancing banana emoji...

So many of our questions (and those of the noobs who blow into CCF daily) have already been answered a dozen times over.

@Druu

Sorry about the confusion with the "first letter" and the No Name guess, but if I had clarified it somehow, then it might have pointed suspicion at "N" since no other guess started with it.

I really enjoy these contests and am thankful for the others going right now. I'm learning how to run one a little better and plan on doing something else in the future!

Spence, let me now when you've sent a PM. Thanks!
