What Silveroid said. My memory takes me back to the '70s when they were a circulation coin yet it was quite rare to see one. They were only given in change by banks only if customers specifically asked and the bank happened to have ordered some in. One reason why is they couldn't be used in vending machines, parking meters etc., and cash registers never seemed to have space for an extra denomination. I don't think anything has changed. |

I love the fifty cent coin, but even I am hesitant to pay $2 for one ~ which seems to be the standard for retailers - considering they are faced at paying double face value to begin with. |

I have seen newer 50 cent pieces at the bank, I believe 2011, and 2012. They had been removed from the wrappers and dumped for face value. I thought wow, someone was dumb.

Banks will take them - however most tellers don't even know what they are when they see them.

I have seen some stores taken them in as quarters due to size and in frequent usage.

TheForce - you say you have the 2017 regular 50 cent piece. Do you have it from a roll you bought or from the traditional 2017 set that was selling most places for $24.95?

Punman, I got it from the Classic Set. I bought 2 sets. I busted one open. Not sure what I have in store for the second set yet.

When these are officially announced and released, I'll probably order a couple of rolls before they sell out.
Originally I had planned on securing a dozen or so circulated 1967 double dated paper dollars at or just above face value.
The commemorative 50 cent pieces may do just as nicely for leaving behind as a tip in various restaurants or giving as gifts.

I do not mind paying $1 for a 50 cent coin. What I don't like is having to buy a whole roll. I guess I could buy the annual set to get the one coin, but that is $25 too, so I am not much further ahead.

Hence, even if you want just couple of coins, need to get both rolls  I want 1+1 roll for myself, but also want "Anniversary" coins, just to give to friends - so will have to buy 2 rolls of each, probably. |
