I came across a mississippi State Quarter 2002 mint code P, that is not layered like other quarters. looking across the edge it is solid. it's reeded, but only silver(color). the middle(coppper color) layer is not there.. it also doesn't look like it's been circulating since 2002.

any ideas?

Pics would help. But from what you describe it could have been plated with something.

Is there any real trick to taking a quality pic of the edge of a coin? focus seems to be impossible with my digital cam.

The pic makes it 'look' like silver, but what I can see of the surfaces don't look proof.

Besides, who would circulate a silver proof? P-mint?
Mint error?

Is it possible that some silver planchets were accidentally sent to Philly and made into business strikes?

That would be interesting, but nearly impossible.

Could have been plated by a secondary source, probably far more likely...

The coin doesn't seem to be "silver". doesn't sound silver when it hits anyway. sounds like a reg quarter. I'm only an amateur collector, but I have never seen a quarter finished all the way around like this, or as old and in as good of shape.

I work in retail and see some good coins passed off for face value occasionally, like my $5 gold piece from 1998 that I bought from a kid at 7-11..
am hoping this may be the case again....

I heard of this kind of "error." People said they found various types of State Quarters like this.

I figured it out.

Yeah this kid was tossing the $5 coin in line. he was going to buy a candy bar with it. I gave him $10 for it.
I have obtained a few silver dollars this way, and always check my quarters at work for silvers... that's how I found this one at work.

The reeded edge doesn't look very deep, or rigid. Almost looks like its plated as someone mentioned, since its almost filled in. I dunno though, interesting find.

No it's not common, it means someone probably got it as a present from the Franklin Mint or some company that plates coins to make them more "collectible". Most, if not, all of the time it just makes the coin worthless.
