Is there a story behind this? There is a P mint mark for every other denomination except pennies. I know P didn't put a mint mark on its coins until 1980, but for some reason they decided not to do so for pennies.

Because Philly is the mother mint, our first mint.

A lot of other denominations don't have P MM. You will never see a Morgan, V-nickel, Mercury, Peace, etc., etc., with a P.

I know that pre-1980 coins do not have mint marks on them for Philadelphia. However, in 1980, Philadelphia began putting a P mint mark on every denomination coin except the penny.

Har har. So I'm guessing there is no answer to this question other than "that's just the way it is."

"The Philly mint has never minted a penny! but they do make a whole lot of cents"

Since I've been collecting coins, I came to the understanding that the proper word is cent and not penny. I now use the word cent but what exactly is a penny then?

I think it was used as a time and labor saying method as the mint marks were stamped by hand. no mint mark has Always assumed it to be Philly

A penny is techincally a British coin that is worth one one-hundredth of a pound (or 1/240 of a pound pre-decimilazation). The plural of penny is "pence."

I understand, but today mint marks are incorporated into the die, and all coins except the penny have P mint marks. You would think if they were to choose one denomination to not put a mint mark on it would be the dime, considering it is so small.

A number of cents were minted in West Point for several years. There were not enough minted to compete with the totals from Philadelphia or Denver, so they left the mint mark off to keep them from being hoarded because of "low mintage numbers".

When the other denominations were given a "P" in 1980, they left it off the cent. Leaving the mint mark off of the West Point minted cents was a fib, but to put a P on it would be a flat out lie!
