Is there such a thing as a 1985 P Spitting Eagle Quarter? Is this an uncommon clash for that year? I've not found any information about them on the internet only on the 1983 P. Is it possible this is a 1983 back with a 1985 front? Please help. Thanks in advance.
It's not a gouge. Under the beak it is a ridge with the side to the right being lower than on the left side. See how it extends above the beak into the letter U.
Bella, Mark suggested that it could be a die gouge. That is a gouge on the die, which would leave a raised line on the coin struck by that die. I just wanted to clarify some terminology for you.
That said, I do agree it's a die clash. Some obverse close ups would be nice. I believe I see clash marks connecting IN GOD WE TRUST to Washington's neck -- this would have been made by the top of the eagle's wing.
Thank you for the terminology clarification Druu, also I see the clash on the front you mentioned. I'm wondering if this coin is a rarity and if it would draw a premium? Does anyone have any suggestions on how to or even if I should attempt to clean off some of the tarnish?
I think it is more of a stain issue (rust?) and not a tarnish issue. So best to leave it alone if you are going to keep it. But not much of a premium for a clashed die that is minor.
