Are you asking about grade or about authenticity?
As far as grade I think it falls in about VF20 Details.
I am not great with early dollars, but I noticed that all of the examples I found online of the small 3 - which yours is- have the one not touching the hair. There may be more than one sub-variety. As I said I am not very good with early dollars.

Its hard to tell from the photo, but does it have a raised rim around the left side of the obv? What's going on at the top of the coin where the denticles appear to be interrupted by a raised rim or something. If that is so, the coin is fake. Oddly the reverse looks better.

Gut is telling me this isn't genuine. I could be wrong as I am no expert on early dollars, Morgan and Peace dollars are my daily stuff

I'm leaning toward not genuine at first glance.

I'm no expert either, but patina seems somewhat suspicious. It will be interesting to find out the authenticity of this coin.

vf details cleaned. looks good to me, but don't rely on my opinion for authenticity. if real, it looks really good for its grade.

Thank you all for your comments. I broke this coin out of an NGC slab. Graded XF Details Improperly Cleaned. I was thinking about submitting it to PCGS, but will not for the time being.

The die variety is Bowers number BB-255. A "Readers' Digest" diagnostic is thick top on the "3" and 13th star is very near the bust.

My grade is Fine-15, cleaned. The surfaces have been gone over with an abrasive. I think that it is genuine, but I'm not 100% sure. The counterfeiters are cleaning a lot of their products these days. Rubbing the surfaces provides them with an opportunity to remove some of the tell-tale marks that would lead one to call their item a counterfeit. This is the way that a number of counterfeits have gotten into third party grading "details" holders. This situation is very scary.

I am certain this will not grade the same again, especially with PCGS. Looking at their photograde examples, there are a few areas that will bring this down. The top row of feathers on the eagle's wings is nearly non-existent, the tail feathers are very worn, the ribbon detail on the obverse.
These details match the VF20 example on said website. I am still somewhat unsure that this is genuine, but as I mentioned earlier Bust dollars are not my area.
I really hope that this is genuine. I would love to own such a coin, even with the cleaning and the grade that I believe it to be.

I see this as a very nice looking dollar. I'm at VF details and the 'details' part is a technicality in my mind. So many of these were cleaned a long time ago. It looks good.

Ham, would you mind sharing what you paid for this coin? You should feel no obligation. And congrats on owning this very attractive example.
