MD = Machine Doubling, as opposed to re-punching.

You can also see that the "second" S is not an exact copy of the first S, which is an absolute necessity for true die doubling. This is the characteristic shelf-like appearance of Strike Doubling, flat and not contoured like the actual mint mark.
