I've spent my entire life collecting coins. I have avoided most of the keys. Now that I'm older, I'm looking at starting keys, but it's still difficult to spend the cake on these keys, even though I can afford them. So, in no particular order, I will list the 5 coins I would most like to own to complete a few sets. Off the top of my head: 1. 1815 Capped bust half. Problem free F-12 or better. 2. 1877 Indian cent. F-12 or better. 3. 1796 Draped Bust quarter. AG-3 or better 4. 1804 Large Cent 5. 1799 Large Celt If I had these 5 coins, I would complete 4 sets.

1) Any AU coins with original surfaces in the seated series with superior eye appeal. Especially slds. 2) early copper in the vf range. 3) pre1800 dollars in f-vf with eye appeal. 4) xf capped bust halves with superior eye appeal. 4) colonials in the fine-vf range with eye appeal. 5) Not sure yet. I'm not a key date chaser.

I will say original, appealing examples of a flowing hair half, a draped bust small eagle dollar, early Capped Bust quarter, and let's say two sweet capped bust halves to round it out :)

I do not really have a top five, but I have been wanting to own an Indian Quarter Eagle for a while, although it is outside of my budget. The design really strikes me, and I think that the fact that it is incuse adds even more uniqueness to the coin.

I have many more than 5 on my wishlist. But if there's an ultimate 5 I think it will look like this (in random order)...
- 20 gulden 1850-1853 (NL) - 20 gulden 1848 (NL) - 10 gulden 1842 (NL) - 3 gulden 1817-1832 (NL) - 10 Kroner / 2.5 Speciedaler 1874 (NO)
However, owning all these would probably cost me about $100.000, so it will have to wait a bit...

I haven't had a 'want' list for many years. I am a generalist, not a specialist collector. My collection has reached some sort of satisfying maturity.
These days, when I see any interesting coin that is available for a good price, I will consider the opportunity of buying it. A bit like a guy who goes into junk shop, surveying all that is on sale, and picking just one good value for money item.
I guess that makes me somewhat of an opportunistic cherry picker across the whole of numismatics, covering all eras and cultures over the last 26 centuries. The only proviso is that the coin was originally intended for circulation, or has been circulated.

Sel, I sort of don't have much of a want list anymore either. I finished 3 major sets last year I'd been working on for more than 20 years and don't really know what else to buy, so its all been whatever's neat at a reasonable cost. It will make for an eclectic collection.

After completing a pre decimal Australian type of bronze and silver, where each type was represented by the rarest date for type, I asked myself: 'Where to from here?'
I decided to build a general collection that could only be representative. The answer: Ancient coins which developed into a general World collection, covering the whole of numismatics.
That leaves me with the opportunity, whenever it comes along, (which is often), to cherry pick anything that takes my interest.
Hence, I don't have a 'want' list.
As a result, my numismatic learning curve over most of my life, has always remained steep.
There are a few collectors here in the CCF, that have a similar approach.
