If you don't have a physical reference like the Krause catalog, search for the coins online.

I use the NGC site and Numista. They will usually give you the specs for each coin.

IMO (digital) catalogues are the best, the important thing is to make sure they're up to date... It's much faster to search in them than the internet, sometimes the NGC/numista site redirect you to similar but very different coins.

E.g. didn't know that Belgian coins exist in French and Dutch. In the catalogue there are some intro's so you may spend a second identifying the language of the coin. While the site redirected me to the "other language" variant which is technically a different coin. (Maybe just me tho)

I prefer catalogues as I've nevee had any problems with them

I agree. They are not 100% complete and you have to be careful that your exact coin is represented on the page, especially near composition transitions such as the same coin being changed from silver to copper-nickel from one year to the next.

Where do you get legal free copies of Krause catalogs?

Well that's a very different question.

While I admit that those free downloads I have are illegal, it's impossible for me to get a legal copy of these catalogues, I simply can't afford any of them.

I'm not justifying that what I did was right, I'm only stating what I prefer as references for identifying silver coins.

I bought a 2010 edition of the Krause 20th-Century Catalog (w/ CD) for about $10 US. It doesn't have to be the most current edition because not much changes. I don't know what the situation is there, but, is there really no affordable and legal way to purchase such as I have?

It is, however, very likely that the CD included with the catalog can and will be used to distribute it in digital format without cost. I could do that if I were so inclined but, I'm not.

The reference is sound. The method in obtaining it is not.
On the other hand, with a quick ebay search, the Krause catalogs are being sold in digital format for cheap. That means that the seller is simply transferring the file from the CD to buyers and it is currently allowed on ebay. Maybe that should change.

I see. The only time I saw the catalogue on sale here in Indonesia is in the form of a CD... the CD sticker showed a few catalogues.. I guess it's made by some random guy putting illegal copies into a single CD and selling them for around $8

And so I guess most if not all numismatists in Indonesia either:
1.only trust words of other collectors/dealers
2.use online sites such as NGCoins or numista
3.download illegal copies of Krause catalogues

..Mostly 3 maybe
