@gidjit & C-V Why are you trying to sell these on ebay? It seems that an auction house would be more appropriate.

spruett001...that's a great question... the large cent market right now is essentially dead. Believe it or not, there is a greater supply of unicorns than demand... Gidjit's 1882 Triple in VG, started at $1, would fetch ~ $200 on ebay (his cost: $20). Gidjit's 1882 Double in EF, started at $1, would fetch ~ $600 on ebay (his cost: $10). I'm being realistic, ask any experienced large cent collector. There is a 1882 double in VF sitting untouched and unwanted at $900 on ebay buy-it-now, I dont think anyone's even made an offer. There are only 3-4 people who are willing to pay > $2000 for a large cent of any kind, and we already have the unicorns. Remember the 1859 9/6 in AU58 that sold on Heritage for $11,000? No one is buying in that range now. So to answer your question, I'm not trying to sell my unicorns on ebay or at auction houses. I'm displaying them on ebay for others to enjoy, the price ensures they dont sell. While that earns me lots of hate and abuse, tell me how I'm worse than Landon who kept his gorgeous MS66 pennies in paper rolls in a vault for 100 years with not an eye to see them. I enjoy hunting unicorns and I'm quietly moving all my unicorns, even the currently unwanted ones, into PCGS holders, where they'll be protected, identified, enjoyed by me, by others and by future generations... That is how I choose to enjoy this hobby...

You can upload several photos per coin as well. As you can see, there are categories for varieties, errors, and even just your favourite coins... I have one for Canadian Nickel Dollar Varieties: https://www.PCGS.com/SetRegistry/co...rieties/1648

Wow! I leave for 3 weeks and all H breaks lose. Gidgit .. I thought that I was the first one to show you one of those when you were over at the house. I'd give it an XF 45 cleaned.... very, very nice. As a side note, I'll say that I've collected Canadian large cents for 40 years and never had a problem with acetone on circulated cents. Zonad's coin was NOT ruined by acetone, but by the partial removal of whatever was on there before, whether darkener or something else. I have never submitted a single coin (and I've had over 10,000 Vickies together here at one time)to any TPG ... and yes I know of finer coins (I've had some in my hands)than C-V's that are in his Registry set. I actually had to chuckle at one of his (C-V's) remarks about being an advocate of NEVER cleaning coins, when ebay and his auctions have been flooded with his "purple" coins for the last 3-4 years .. but he was "preserving" them , not cleaning or smearing stuff on them so he says. I HAVE had some discoloration with G00-Gone and would advise newbies to stay away from it. As I said, no problem with pure acetone and a distilled water rinse for circulated items that actually NEED cleaning. I don't deal much with UNC coins, because everything that I collect has to have a history of hands being on them, including all my antiques and other collecting categories. But you should only clean a coin when it really needs it (PVC green, lots of Vicky crud, old darkened that has discolored, and glue'toothpaste deposits). Sorry I couldn't have been involved as the initials posts were being made, but I've been without any internet or other electronic access while in Dipstick Acres, Okla (or so I call it).

okiecoiner...I was going to let you have your last word but I do have to address some of your defamatory statements... 1. Maybe Zonad's coin wasn't ruined by Acetone, acetone just "uncovered" the old cleaning as you hypothesize..that's a very possible explanation, we will never know as only Randy knows what the coin looked like before. It did look uncleaned in the ICCS flip when I saw it just before he bought it...but the pictures were bad and after all, it IS ICCS (the sanctuary of cleaned coins)...you may be right, it is unfortunate though how the coin looks now.. 2. I have a lot of "cleaned" coins in my inventory because I buy a lot of raw "cleaned" coins on ebay, yes, even those hiding in ICCS flips where major Canadian dealers like to send their problem coins to be "hidden"...of course I have never seen you decry the practice of Canadian dealers toning cleaned coins and sending them to ICCS which then turns a blind eye and pretends those problem coins dont "have a problem" (it's not like I'm accusing you of HYPOCRISY)...so yes, I have a ton of Victoria coins that were cleaned by someone else in the past - sometimes I leave them alone, sometimes I play with them to tone or retone them, however I have never turned an original Vicky into a "cleaned" or "hairlined" coin. I am not bothered by cleaned coins - you are, that's your choice but to suggest that I damage my coins is defamatory. 3. the "purple" coins you refer to, I think, are coins that have a certain shine to them due to Renaissance Wax. Renaissance Wax is used by the British Museum to protect their copper and bronze artifacts that are hundreds or thousands of years OLDER than Vicky cents. None of the TPG grading companies have any issue with it...you can hate it, it's a free country. If you accidentally buy one of my slabbed coins, by all means, crack the slab and drown it in acetone and the Renaissance Wax comes right off! - no more shine! I like Renaissance Wax to provide a barrier against moisure, heat, oxygen, etc, and it gives a nice pleasant shine. You hate it - that's cool too. Claiming that it makes coins look purple - is just plain stupid. Again, if you have issues with my photography, you are free to hate my ebay photos, it's a free country. "Who Uses RENAISSANCE Wax-Polish: UK: British Museum, Victoria & Albert Museum. Royal Armories (Tower of London , London & Leeds, National Army Museum, Imperial War Museum, the Wallace Collection, H.M. the Queen's Royal Armorer (at Marlborough House), the Guards Museum (Wellington Barracks), the Gurkha Museum (Winchester), the Military Museums at Aldershot, Royal Green Jackets Regimental Museum, the Gunsmith at Chatham Historic Dockyard (Kent), the Johnny Armstrong Gallery, and Museum of Border Arms & Armor (Scotland), National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland. Belgium: Musee Royal de l'Armee et d'Histoire Militaire-Brussels. USA: Gunsmith at Colonial Williamsburg, the Smithsonian, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Academy of Art-Honolulu, Texarcana College-Bladesmithing & Metallurgy, Rockfeller Restorations, and many many more institutions around the world."

I don't see a problem with waxing coins using something which is easily and noninvasively dissolved, but a TPG which will slab the result as an original-surfaces coin is a big problem and should be classified as a "kitchen-table slabber." As far as I'm concerned, that's all I need to hear about the TPG in question. Not that their willingness to enumerate die poop on the label didn't have me there already.

@c-v How is "Renaissance Wax" applied to a coin? Also, how does it protect against heat? Have you tried Verdi-Care and, if so, what are your thoughts? Quote: Texarcana College-Bladesmithing & Metallurgy If I'm correct, you mean Texarkana. That's where I as born but, I never knew TC had a bladesmithing program.

As far as I can tell, there wasn't a defamatory statement anywhere in my post, C-V. You must interpret words differently than I do. I DO have a problem, however, with one of your quotes .. "of course I have never seen you decry the practice of Canadian dealers toning cleaned coins and sending them to ICCS which then turns a blind eye and pretends those problem coins dont "have a problem" (it's not like I'm accusing you of HYPOCRISY)" You evidently haven't read the scores of posts that I've put up about ICCS, CCCS, NGC and others about certing cleaned or restored coins with nothing mentioned in the remarks. I also send at least 50 emails every year to ebay vendors for putting up misdescribed coins up for auction and I'll always mention cleaning on coins put up on these coin sites for evaluation. I have never even submitted a coin to a TPG for certing and I don't have any "Canadian Dealer" buddies, so where is your comment coming from? I don't turn a blind eye on anything, coinwise .. I've been kicked off more coin sites than you have, C-V, mostly for calling dealers, vendors, authors, and TPG's as cheats and liars and for them trying to take advantage of newbies. Ahhh, it's nice to be back here again and listen to complaints from you. I'll go back to protecting the newbies.

Quote CV.. Quote:I'm displaying them on ebay for others to enjoy, the price ensures they dont sell. That's a very interesting statement.. A while back I called your ebay listings as just a "Billboard for your coins" and you were deeply offended by my calling it that. You even sent me personal nasty emails to that effect, and all I was doing was calling it as I saw it..nothing more.. Now you have the gall to state that your listings are just that.. You flood ebay "every few days with the same 100's" or is it now 1000's of repeat listing and actually are taking over the top pages of the ebay coin listings and making it very difficult for other to get any top page listings anymore. Who wants to go and look at the same coins over and over and over again every few days..?.(not me) And now you state here that you don't even plan to sell the stuff. The perfect formula to kill the ebay large cent market single handedly....

You really can't make this stuff up... I was referring to CCCS, your weapon of choice for foisting minor die differences as "major errors" onto an unsuspecting public. Since the majority of your offerings are in their slabs, the inference is so are the majority of the waxed coins you offer in slabs. And, quite frankly, it isn't that hard to push a cleaned coin through PCGS either. You just have to be good at it. Quote:The perfect formula to kill the ebay large cent market single handedly.... Frankly, that practice works in my favor, and in the favor of every specialist who is willing to move past the chaff and see the wheat.

It does seem a bit like kids in a schoolyard at times in the 5 pages of this thread. And just when it settles down,it starts up again. This thread had some fine moments and a lot of information shared that is based on fact and some opinion. Bottom line for me, this thread was meant to celebrate a members coin. Not become a platform to take shots at each other. Congrats gidjit for a great coin.
