Hello,

I am currently in the process of the breaking down a nice world collection, with more than the usual amount of Ancients and Medieval pieces than I usually handle... These 4 pieces in particular have me stumped... Does anyone recognize these or have any clues?

The first (upper left hand) piece looked like a Hall (Germany) piece but I could not find an exact match in my references?

Nice pieces @jdmern! I agree that the top left one has one side that looks like Hall, but the rev doesn't. I'll dig into these this afternoon for you.

Nice work on ID'ing three of them @BobL!

I have spent a couple hours looking through my Roberts and my Bonhoff, but have been unable to find the lower left coin. With those four fleurs-de-lis on the rev surrounding the man, I was thinking early Feudal France or perhaps one of the neighboring areas of Germany. The closest I can find to match that coin is Bonhoff 851 and 856. These are denars from Kyritz and Spandau, which are more central or even Eastern Germany. In both cases, one side of the coin has a man surrounded by four similar objects (stars or crescent moons). These are from the 1200s.

I think that I must have the timing about right, but clearly the mint was further west. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Thanks so much for the help!

I have a research question BobL, how were you able to pin these down so quickly? When I'm IDing pieces out of my element, with no readable text, I sort of base my searches on elements that look familiar to certain areas and try to narrow it down from there, is that similar to what you do?

Spence, I had not even realized the designs in the fields of that piece were fluers-de-lis (though it seems so obvious now!)

These pieces being mostly Germanic doesn't surprise me as this collection was assembled in Germany...

Bottom left is a medieval Denar from Brandenburg, Bahrfeldt 713. The coin is believed to be minted under Karl IV. between 1373 and 1377 although Bahrfeldt was unsure, whether this attribution by earlier numismatists was 100% correct.

Av: margrave between 4 fleurs-de-lis
Rv: circle of 6 crowns with dots in the middle

If you intend to "get rid" of this one feel free to message me :)

Best regards from Berlin,
Potsdam
