I'm trying my best not to buy modern commems right out of the gate as usual as most can be had cheaper down the line. When I read that the Gold $5 Breast Cancer Awareness coin was going to have a pink hue to it, well that was just gimmicky enough to spark my interest.
Turns out that this coin is not only different in color but also different in composition being that it is only 85% gold rather than usual 90%. I get that they need to add different alloys in different amounts for the color, but I'm not sure where this coin is ending up. I thought maybe they will make up for it in total weight but I don't think that's the case.
The $5 commems as we know them have a 90% gold content and weigh 8.36 grams with a gold weight of 0.2419oz. The Breast Cancer $5 gold weighs 7.931 grams. The mint does not list the AGW but I think it would be safe to say it is not .2419oz. but of course I could be wrong.
I wonder if the mint will take the gold content into consideration when pricing these or will the composition be an issue to the buying public? What do you think?

As you wrote, the Breast Cancer $5 gold coin weighs 7.931 grams of which 85% are gold. This means 6.741 grams of gold, or 0.2168 oz.
This makes a difference of 0.0251 oz compared to 90% gold $5 commems, or $33 (give or take) at the moment in terms of gold price difference.
One can only hope this will be considered by the US Mint when pricing these coins, but I wouldn't bank on it...

So glad you did the math on this, I started to but didn't have the time for the conversions, so thank you for that.
$33 isn't that much in terms of gold but it certainly is in terms of cash that you are putting out. Small amounts like that are big enough for me to do some considering. I passed on the 10th oz. Liberty Gold because to me it just wasn't worth it. In my opinion(other than donations to the cause) the only thing this one has going for it is the color and down the line that may or may not be a good thing.

Some of the proceeds from the sale are going to research, per the Congressional authorization: Quote:
SEC. 7. SURCHARGES.
(a) In General.--All sales of coins issued under this Act shall
include a surcharge of--
(1) $35 per coin for the $5 coin;
(2) $10 per coin for the $1 coin; and
(3) $5 per coin for the half-dollar coin.
(b) Distribution.--Subject to section 5134(f) of title 31, United
States Code, all surcharges which are received by the Secretary from the sale of coins issued under this Act shall be promptly paid by the Secretary to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, New York, New York, for the purpose of furthering breast cancer research funded by the Foundation. This is common for commemoratives anyway, so the $33 "loss" is not accounted for here -- it's still an overall loss. |

So is anyone planning to "jump on" this tomorrow at the first opportunity to order? Do you think this will sell more or less than Boy's Town? I think it might sell a bit more than Boy's Town due to the novelty of the pink color, and also will appeal to some people who are not collectors.

The mint posted their prices for the two. $421 unc & $431 for proof. I don't know what the Boys Town was to compare

Right now the price of gold is in the $1300.00 to $1349.99 bracket. This means that, according to the pricing grid, that a commemorative gold UNC would cost $426 and the proof $436.
Essentially, we're getting only a discount of $5 per coin but should have received something along the lines of $33 each based on the intrinsic gold value. The $35 donation hasn't changed which could have explained the price difference.
I guess the US Mint thinks we're not good at math...

With spot Au currently between $1300-$1350, the Mint's pricing grid indicates the price of these coins would be $436 and $426. So, it looks like there's a $5 pre-issue discount being applied. This is pretty typical for commemoratives and seems like it usually lasts for a month. The Boys Town commemoratives started out at $400.45 and $395.45 for the PRF and UNC respectively, but again it depended upon the price of Au at the time. Had the price of Au then been what it is now, the prices would have been $424.75 and $419.75 (again with the $5 pre-issue discount). Comparing this year's prices to last year's prices does show that the Mint bumped up the price difference between PRF and UNC to $10 versus the $5 it had been for previous coins. Also, if you're comparing prices, then don't forget that the BCA $5 coin has .02513 ozt less gold in it than previous Half Eagle coins. With the current Au spot price, that amounts to a little over $33 which is a not so apparent price increase as well. Right now it's in the middle of the $1300-$1350 range on the Mint's pricing grid. The prices of the coins change by $12.25 every time the Au spot price moves into another range. So, if you think Au is going down then you should wait, or if you think it's going up, then you should get the coins now. Here's what Au has been doing for the past few months (from JM Bullion)  |

Just ordered one of each Breast Cancer coins, and was surprised that it took only about 1 1/2 minutes total with no problems. I collect the modern commem $ and half $. But I purchased the gold coins for my wife who is a Breast Cancer Survivor now for three years. I may send the gold coins to PCGS for their new label.

So after all my whining about the $33, I decided to get the gold proof. While on the website I got on the chat and asked about the price.
Would you happen to know why they didn't discount the BCA gold coin as it is only 85%?

Unfortunately, we do not have that information. We are currently selling the coin based on the market price for gold.
After that she stated the content of the gold didn't matter, if it were only 5% it would still be the same price.
They also jerked me around on free shipping. I did order three products this year, except one is the WWI Navy medal wich won't ship until may. So I paid the shipping but it didn't ship so it doesn't count. Go figure.
