Hello CCF, I literally just pulled this coin out of an uncirculated bank roll of 1974 cents. What could have caused this damage at the mint? Another coin? By the look of the scratches I don't see how another coin could have done this. Your thoughts on the cause of scratches and grade are appreciated. Thank you!

I carefully pulled it from this roll so how is it PMD?

Doesn't appear to be struck through based on how the metal is displaced. Damaged, very sad for an otherwise nice coin.

Quote:I carefully pulled it from this roll so how is it PMD? Because the mint doesn't roll business strike coins. They bag them and send them banks where they're rolled. Any damage after a coin leaves the mint, even if it's a bank doing the damage, is considered PMD. Odd things happen, maybe it spilled out on to the floor of the bank and got run over by a forklift. Who knows? I've seen lots of strange things in OBW rolls - I've cracked what seems like a million of them, it's very interesting. Here's an example, a brown 1969 coin right in the middle of this otherwise solid 1982D OBW roll:

That particular coin could have been in a bag of coins before it went into a rolling machine! There are far too many ways that this coin could have been damaged, but from the minting process, nope PMD!

Yep, I agree damaged. Your cent is spendable.

I appreciate everyone's help! I found a few beauties. Here's one of them... What grade would you give it? Thanks!

Not bad, it's a large date. Some obverse field distractions and a few hits on the reverse and rim. Not sure if that's a light verdigris film or toning on the reverse.

Here's one of the nicest 1974 small dates I've found searching rolls:

Looks like a 63 or 64, stain on obverse is extremely distracting.
