Thinking about sending in a few coins from a mint set for grading and maybe flipping. What's the typical grade given to mint set coins on average? I read to look what the population report is for coins and where you see a large leap from this grade to that grade, that's the lower is probably the grade you would receive. Thoughts?

The lowest would be MS60 and the average MS63.

Though they aren't circulated if in the packs, they were minted without too much extra consideration.

Your chance of finding coins in mint sets worth submission is not great. It depends on the years you are searching.

Actually my experiance is that they tend to be in the 64-5 range. I suspect that the samples are taken from the top of the box, bin, bag...or whatever and so are less likely to be baggy. While I have never had one that I think would grade as a 60-1, I have a more than a few 66s and at least a couple of 67s.

Though the higher grades tend to be in cents and dimes.

Any thoughts on that nickel for a grade? I'm planning on using ANACS for the grading.

Depending on the year, most are about 62-64.

I'm seeing and buying slabbed nickels, mostly proofs in the PF67-68 range right now for less than $8.00 a piece. The Mint sets are running about the same but the grades are lower for the same prices(MS65-57). If you can get up to a 68 or higher, which in ANY mint set I've seen hasn't happened, then yea, the prices are inflated greatly. Just don't see those come up that often. Most, as has been stated, are highest of 65 out of cello.

Your coin, pix aren't good enough to assess too correctly, looks only at 65 tops. The face, rims and reverse chatter, plus the area under vest is disturbing. You willing to spend the fees to get a $8.00 coin? Not me my friend, losing proposition. You may find suckerser, buyers on ebay who'll pay you a net of $10-15 not really knowing the true value of MS65's.

I'd say 64-65 is probably typical. 63 is pretty bottom end for MS; you don't see many 61 or 62 coins, even for older MS coins. 66-67 are unusual and anything higher is probably hand picked out of a large number of sets.

Sent off 10 nickels for grading that I pulled from mint sets. Will see how they come back. Should have back in 10 days. Hoping for at least 1-2 65's out of it

Results are in. Sent in 10 1981-P Nickels. Five MS63 and five MS64. Shipping label doesn't identify number of steps so will have to wait and see when I get coins in hand.
