The Mint Mark Of The 1971 Proof Ike

Ammonite New Member United States 9 Posts	Posted 06/27/2008 11:30 pm I have a question to those who have a large collection of such Ikes or a lot of experience with them. Is it normal for the mint mark of "S" to vary in its location under the neck, like slightly raised or lowered? I have two Proof Ike dollars minted in 71 and their mint marks are in slightly different places. One of the Ikes is still in its original government packaging, and its mint mark is placed lower than the other non-packaged one. Evidence that one is a fake? Report this Post to the Staff

They are so named because Leroy Van Allen and George Mallis wrote the authoritative reference for those two silver dollars. You are right in the fact that many coins have a large number of varieties and there are different numbering systems for each type of coin. There is even a two book series dedicated to finding rare die varieties that are not sold as such called the Cherrypicker's Guide. Report this Post to the Staff
