Hello Evelyn,

It could be what you described here is a copy of the 1974 aluminum cent.

Do you have any photos of the coin that you can post here?

Need a pic. Could also be a penny coated in mercury. Us kids did that back in the 1970s.

I will echo the above comments. We definitely need pictures of the coin, and the weight of it to at least 0.1g would help.

You need to either type a reply in the "Quick Reply" box at the bottom of the page, or click "Reply to Topic". Not "New Topic" each time

The coin is small in your picture, but it does have a hint of the copper coloring. Try to post a closer image, and here is the CCF Free Image Optimizer to help crop your images.

It maybe plated.
It may have come from a mint set and the cello turn the color on the coin. I found a proof cent that had turned that color still in the cello. So I new it hadn't been removed.

In the last batch I found some gold colored and blotchy. I figured out that when they cut the cello it cut a hole in the cello and the coin had turned color.
The only way it could be silver is if it were struck on a dime planchet. But this is not seen on your coin.

But I'm guessing the weight will be normal and it was plated from what I can see.

I posted this on another thread some time back, but several hundreds (maybe as many as a couple thousand) of 1974-D cents were chromed by an automobile chroming shop for trade show giveaways at the Denver Merchandise Mart back in the day. We received several of these in change at our family hardware store at the time, and they continued to surface around here for years. I have one or two in my junk boxes somewhere.

If only he did the same for 1944 LWC, he would drive coin dealers crazy for years.

I've seen gold plated coins here from 1995 that were given out as examples of their plating shop.

Wowzers. Gold plating would definitely get attention.

I'll say this: they did an excellent job with the chrome plating. If their re-chromed bumpers and trim look that good, they'd get my business!

The 1974-D cents appeared here in 1974. I have a sneaking suspicion that they bought a fresh bag of cents and plated the whole bag. It generated quite a buzz in the Front Range, and I think it was the Rocky Mountain News (RIP!) that hunted down the story.

Don't worry, all the other plated coins out there already do, and have for many years.
