I like that chaplain name tag Doug. Very unique. Thanks for showing. 1913-V I find my share but of course it's never enough. I think I would give it up if I could find some of the stuff Doug finds.

I bought my first detector last summer (Ace 250) and drug the kids out a couple times. They were bored after 1 hour, even though we found a couple really nice pieces. I can't get them to go with me anymore. I would have loved this as a kid. Other than a few dollars in change, we found a 1920 Liberty Quarter & a set of WWII naval aviator wings on the first 2 days. I went a few times after that, but nothing as nice. Image: 1stday.jpg80.84 KB Image: 2ndday.jpg80.34 KB Image: 1920quarterfront.jpg68.07 KB

jfransch, Awesome finds!! I would love to live near the ocean. Couldn't imagine finding something like that. I would imagine you gave that area another try?

Mikep.. The site is a known galleon wreck and has been salvaged since the mid 1960's...however I truly believe in the theory that "they'll never find it all" and I go back whenever I am able. A group of us subcontract from the company that owns the salvage lease and we manage to find some good stuff every year. Those 2 coins were found in the sand pile blown out of a deep hole by one of the professional salvage boats looking for "big hits", not individual coins. The ship sank in a category 5 hurricane and scattered her cargo everywhere. It's just laying around waiting to be found.

That's a great story, sounds like good times! I go with a group of friends every year to dive, and fish for Tarpon in the Keys. Maybe next time I need to rent a detector and do a little research.

Hey Mikep. My son found an eight reales cob on the beach with a detector when he was 12 (7 years ago) down on Lower Matacumbe Key straight onshore from where the "El Lerri" sunk. Try your luck there. Another friend of mine found a 1732 pillar dollar on the same beach earlier that year. The dive master on the boat we go out on found some gold jewelry (broken but old spanish) without even using a metal detector. Florida is full of wrecks, just stay on the beach unless you have a salvage license.

G'Day JF the sound was a mellow one as it was about 24 inches deep and didn't sound sharp till I moved a fair bit of soil and as for knowing I had one well I dig about 300 bullets to a nugget I also dig every sound and I don't use the discriminator as you can discriminate out deep gold so I tend to get a fair bit of steel as well (mate found a flint lock pistol if he used the discriminator he wouldn't have found it)so there you have it and sorry for hijacking your thread 1913 regards Harry

I never discriminate either. I figure when the detector sings, it means something is there. Bet I have more fishing weights that you have bullets LOL. Thanks for the info. I agree, discriminating can mean missing a great find. Thanks for sharing, I'm sure 1913 won't mind.
