Is this kind of Mint mark common in Morgans?

A blobby S? Yes. Looks like it might be double punched.

Nohope, can you post a larger pic of the mintmark area. Filled MMs are common but yours appears to have a chip on it. Got any idea of the Vam#, broken forth star & broken r in trust stand out. Any doubling ?

Hi

Looks like you have a few VAM attributes on this coin.
I have had a few MS 78-S's and some are common. Others ?
On the obverse you have a broken B in pluribus, a die chip on the eyelid, a broken star on the left side (right side if looking at it)
On the reverse a broken R in trust, a possible clash below the O in dollar (lower right between the O and the denticles), Mintmark looks
over punched and or with a die chip.

The broken r and broken star are common attributes on 1878's so they will most likely not be helpful for identification.

The mint mark looks like a die chip to me. I haven't seen one like it before, but I haven't spent much time with 78's. I looked a little on VAMworld and didn't see anything like it either, but I may have overlooked it. Let us know if you find anything.
