I was back east a while back and went to find some goodies with a metal detector at an old abandoned ship building cove. I found many (corroded) large cents with holes punched in the center - mostly dated in the late 1840s and early 1850s. After doing some research and talking to some local old timers I learned that the ship builders apparently would use the large cents as washers as they were cheap, readily available and were suitable for holding some boat parts together. Anyone else find a similar story/situation? Comments?
An elderly relative of mine has a very old clock which he claims has a US Large Cent as a gear inside. Yes, it appears that someone filed the sides of the coin so that it was the exact shape of a lost gear. I have never seen it, but he swears that there is something of the sort inside. So I do agree that large cents were used for all sorts of things besides spending.
