Just found another one of these in VV stage A. This one looks all like a D and none like an S. Just adding a pic for the record here.

On the Variety Vista site you can see a SE 'D' on the Stage 'A'

They call it an East, but I feel it is a SE on their example.

In a bizarre twist, I just opened a different roll of 1956-D B/U coins, and found another one of these. This one is in a slightly different die stage and now the S is nearly fully visible. Again, just tossing this image out for the record.

It looks like the a has a straight serif on bottom,
Could it has started as an upside down mint mark error that got caught and the mint decided to correct by punching a d mintmark over the upside s?
