Lines On A Coin That "change Directions"

Numisto Valued Member United States 195 Posts	Posted 05/29/2019 7:58 pm All, This is just a general question and I can't find the best place for it. Sorry if this is not it. I see this on a lot of coins. When you see lines on a coin that "change directions" as you rotate it, is that always indicative of a wipe or can that be as a result of the striking process? Or, what should that tell the person evaluating the coin? The coin in question has tons of luster and it is somewhat proof-like. A quick wipe isn't out of the question. It's one of the things I'm considering, but I am hoping there might be other things that caused this. Thanks for the advice. Report this Post to the Staff

Slider23 Pillar of the Community United States 4469 Posts	Posted 05/30/2019 10:15 am On proof like coins with a mirror finish in the fields a wipe can cause hairlines to be visible and change directions when when coin is rotated or a mix of die polish lines and hairlines or just die polish lines.
