main concern is the reverse rim bleeding into the lettering... off-center strike in a collarless press?

Authentic, VG details net AG, porous The rims may have been rolled as seen in " Dryer Coins", accounting for the odd positioning.

It is called 'die flow' and results, from what I have read', in the edge legend 'flowing' into the rims. You can see something very similar in this 1812 S-289 in my collection:
