I mostly collect US coins so this may sound dumb but do Canadian coins have mint marks? Just wondering.

Thats not a dumb question. I never thought about Canadian coins having mint marks as I too only collect US coins.

In short, no, Canada doesn't have "mintmarks" in the same sense as US coins do, because Canada only has one mint. The Royal Canadian Mint has only recently begun to include a mintmark (the maple leaf/M shaped mint logo) on coins made there. Some modern Canadian coins have a small "P" on the obverse, which to an American collector looks suspiciously like a mintmark. But this is actually a "composition mark", denoting what the coin is made of, not where it was struck; P is short for "plated steel", as opposed to the pure nickel previously used.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Almost, at one time there was the Heaton Mint. The coins minted there have an 'H'. They were minting from 1854-1857. They were thinking of switching to decimal system. Later specimens were also struck at the Heaton mint.

Although it is argued if these are Canadian or Brittish coins, the Gold Sovereign was minted at the Ottawa mint from 1908-1920(?) had a 'C' mintmark.

I hate to rehash this, but I have a couple proof-like sets that have a W as a mint mark..signifying that they were produced at the Winnipeg Mint.

In 1997 both mints made coins for that year.In the uncirculated sets the only way to tell the difference is the coin placements in the packaging. Also the finishes are much different. -1998 regular and 1998w [Winnipeg] -1999 & 1999P test set -2001P was first introduced [P] steel planchet up to 2006 coins. -2003P & 2003WP mint marks -2006 and on the mint logos are know used. #NOTE. Some of these varieties are only found in sets.

There are two mints in Canada. Winnipeg and Ottawa.

Oddly, the only time the Winnipeg mint puts a W mint mark on a coin, is for a collector coin (to boost sales?). Regular coins produced by the Winnipeg mint have no W mint mark, just as regular coins produced by the Ottawa mint have no O mint mark. Both "mints" essential operate as the same mint, although having two different locations.

Yep, and they both put the RCM Logo on the coins where the P used to be.

Mint marks? not normally, but there are different marks used to denote the composition, and also to denote changes having been made in the portrait, , etc. To give you an idea, the 2006 cents are steel plated, (P), also copper-nickel, no mark, and non-magnetic., a Logo which indicates, a change in the size of the portrait, ( BTW, I am trying to recall from memory, so errors are possible), FYI, the 2006 sp copper-nickel, no "P" is very scarce, and worth money. If you get, (buy, beg, or borrow_) the Charletons Catalogue, you will find the correct info. Mine is like erroneous, but "free"!' FYI, in the small cents, you will find the 1922, '23, '24, '25, 'and 1926, very hard to find!. There is a 1926, "dot" which is as scarce as "hens teeth"!,. Don't bother looking, there are only a couple, or so, known. THis is "general info, and not based on fact, so act accordingly, but have fun! Dick

Please see the attached useful link, under the dates of 1942, (introduction of the 12 sided 5 cent), and the 1963 (introduction of the rounded 5 cent). What amazes me is, I have 1942 12 sided tombac AND a 1942 round nickel 5 cent in my collection. I'm assuming they must have minted the round before switching. http://www.islandnet.com/~kpolsson/.../can1940.htm

Quote: There is a 1926, "dot" which is as scarce as "hens teeth"... 1936 dot is the rare date. The dot was to signify an interim coin.
